Tribute for a Traffic Engineering Giant, John D. DeShazo

Feb 15, 2024 | Client News

Masterplan mourns the passing of a longtime collaborator, John D. DeShazo, who passed away in January at 96 years of age. DeShazo was a graduate of Texas A&M University and spent the early part of his career working for the Texas Highway Department.  He was also a colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves.

He was hired by the City of Dallas as the Director of Transportation for the City of Dallas in 1965. In 1980, DeShazo founded his own company, which has become the brand name associated with traffic studies, design, and consultation in the region.

DeShazo helped to mentor more than 60 professional traffic engineers, fostering their advancement through their careers.  He was equally involved in civic affairs, serving on the board of the Greater Dallas Planning Council, Chairman of the Transportation Committee for Goals for Dallas, as a member of the North Central Task Force in the North Central Expressway Corridor of Dallas, and as a member of the Transportation Committee for the City of Dallas. He was a recipient of the Greater Dallas Award of Merit presented by the Citizen’s Traffic Safety Committee. He was the president of the Institute of Traffic Engineers Texas chapter.

In many ways, he created an industry with his intelligence, hard work, and dedication to his employees and clients. Masterplan will miss collaborating with Mr. DeShazo.
